WNC Educators’ Exchange

AI for educators, grounded in Western North Carolina.

AI is already in WNC classrooms. Here’s what educators reported, what campuses are trying, and how to join the conversation with peers on Nov. 13 at Mars Hill University.

Coming soon

Faculty & student community contest

A contest for faculty and students is coming. Teachers and students will team up on projects that use AI to help their communities. We’ll post the details when they’re ready.

Survey report

Brain first, then AI.

  1. 1
    Protecting Critical Thinking

Real understanding can't be fast-tracked, so AI must sharpen thinking, not replace it.

  2. 2
    Create an Open Dialog

Many students already use AI, so teach good judgment skills and proper use instead of bans.

  3. 3
Policy Built for a Fast-Moving Target

AI changes faster than policy can, so treat your guidelines as a living document.

Campus practice

A few approaches already in use across WNC.

  1. 1
Red / Yellow / Green AI policy on assignments

Red: no use allowed. Yellow: with supervision. Green: all uses allowed.

  2. 2
Faculty course on AI in education

Online course (~1 hour per week) organized around the Five E model: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate.

  3. 3
    Three pillars: assessment, usefulness, workplace

Process-based assessment, responsible classroom AI use, and workplace tools after foundations are solid.

Classroom

Protecting Critical Thinking

Real understanding can't be fast-tracked, so AI must sharpen thinking, not replace it.

True understanding cannot be fast-tracked; it is a deliberate, deeply human process. While AI provides an illusion of instant learning, education must cultivate the deep critical thinking skills required to evaluate AI output, while still teaching the foundational skills.

AI handles fast knowledge well: quick answers, error correction, lookup tasks. Education is built around slow knowledge—the kind that requires wrestling with something, getting it wrong, and arriving at an insight that sticks because you earned it. Brain first, then AI.

ABTech

Red / Yellow / Green AI policy on assignments

Red: no use allowed. Yellow: with supervision. Green: all uses allowed.

PolicyTransparency

ABTech’s AI use policy uses a red, yellow, green system on assignments so faculty and students share one vocabulary for what is permitted.

Transparency sits alongside it: syllabus statements and student self-identification of AI use. Detection tools alone produce false positives and do not teach judgment.

About

Educators Exchanging Ideas about A.I.

The Exchange grew out of the Land of Sky AI Summits and is part of the 2026 Brainhub work. It’s a place for educators across the region to meet, trade ideas, and learn from each other.

Last January we asked educators across Western North Carolina how AI shows up in their classrooms, where policy hasn’t kept up, and what they need next. Their answers—and the conversations at the Land of Sky summits—became the Top 10 Issues.
