Top 10 A.I. Issues Facing WNC Educators

From the 2026 WNC Educator Survey (January 2026) and the regional summits. These aren’t future problems—they’re already showing up in classrooms across WNC.

Last January we asked educators across Western North Carolina how AI shows up in their classrooms, where policy hasn’t kept up, and what they need next. Their answers—and the conversations at the Land of Sky summits—became the Top 10 Issues.

The survey makes the picture clear: 85% of AI-active faculty already use these tools, 65% say policy is behind or nonexistent, and92% name loss of critical thinking as their leading concern.

One principle ties all ten together: Brain first, then AI. Used well, AI extends what a capable person can do. Used as a substitute for learning, it removes the work that builds understanding.
